Zero Waste Action Plan

The District of Squamish is updating its Zero Waste Action Plan. The plan was last completed in 2016. Since then, the District has made significant steps in implementing the actions. However, there is still work to do. The purpose of this update is to ensure the Action Plan continues to improve waste reduction and diversion, while supporting Squamish residents and businesses through the transition.

This Action Plan guides the District on key focus areas and priority actions that will have maximum impact in reducing the amount of waste created in our community, while supporting circular economy growth and development.

The following guiding principles will inform the development of the updated Zero Waste Action Plan:

1. Zero Waste provides an ambitious goal to guide continual improvements to the waste management system.
2. The Circular Economy couples economic wellbeing with environmental sustainability.
3. The Waste Reduction Hierarchy prioritizes actions towards reduce and reuse.

Project Update:

The District has now adopted a new Zero Waste Action Plan. You can review the plan here. Thank you to everyone who participated in the engagement process to help inform this plan.

Engagement opportunities for the Zero Waste Strategy update are now closed. Residents and businesses were asked how Squamish can reduce or divert waste and support the growth of the circular economy. A survey and ideas tool were open until September 4, 2022. There were also community pop-ups held across Squamish.
