When will this new AAA bike route be built?

The AAA route will be built gradually over time:

    • One section that was planned previously between downtown and the Industrial Park will be complete in 2023.
    • Other sections will be prioritized based on the District's Active Transportation Plan.
    •  Other considerations, such as alignment with other capital projects, cost/funding opportunities and the District's Active and Safe Routes to School program, will also impact the timing of sections of the route being built.
    • Completion of the whole route linking downtown to Brackendale will likely occur in the medium-term. However, there may be opportunities for short-term temporary solutions in some areas.

How is the fast-commuter route along Government road different from the AAA route?

There is an existing "fast-commuter route" between Brackendale and downtown that follows the Government Road corridor. This route is primarily a painted on-street bike lane with no buffer or separation from vehicle traffic.

For some riders this is an ideal facility as it enables them to travel quickly. For other riders, the lack of protection from vehicle traffic may make the route feel less comfortable. They may be unlikely to ride with children or less experienced riders on this route.

The goal of this project is to provide options for all types of riders - by maintaining the fast commuter route as well as adding/extending an all ages and abilities route.

In some sections these two may merge into one due to space constraints, but in these cases, every effort will be made to accommodate faster cyclists.
