The District of Squamish is creating an Accessibility Plan. It will identify barriers for people with disabilities accessing District facilities, programs, services, and information, and create a plan to remove these barriers. If you are comfortable, we want to know what barriers you (or someone you care for) face when accessing District facilities, infrastructure, and information. This could mean many things, but some examples include:

  • District facilities such as Municipal Hall, the Library, or Brennan Park
  • District infrastructure such as sidewalks, trails, or playgrounds
  • District information such a job postings, Council meetings, and news updates

Your input will help us develop the accessibility plan. It will take time to remove all barriers, however, this plan is the first step in identifying how we can improve accessibility going forward.

In 2021, the Province of British Columbia passed the Accessible BC Act. This legislation requires municipalities to develop an accessibility plan that addresses all aspects of accessibility related to municipal infrastructure, programs, and services. If you are comfortable, we hope you will let us know your experience so we can improve accessibility for everyone.

Feedback opportunities for this stage of the project have now concluded. The following opportunities to participate were available:

  • A survey was available on this page. For those who prefer not to complete the survey online, support was available by emailing kkidner@squamish.ca
  • Identifying where barriers exist in physical spaces using the online mapping tool, or using in-person maps located at Squamish Public Library, The 55, and Brennan Park Recreation Centre
  • Completing a comment card at The Squamish Public Library, The 55, or Brennan Park Recreation Centre
  • Registering for a small group discussion to share your (or someone you care for's) accessibility experiences

Accessibility Plan and Next Steps

Thank you to everyone who participated in the process to help the District identify barriers to accessing District facilities, infrastructure, and information. The final Accessibility Plan, which includes a summary of what we heard, as well as goals and objectives to improve accessibility at the District of Squamish is now available. View the Accessibility Plan here.

Staff presented the Accessibility Plan, as well as what we heard from the community to Council on June 27, 2023. You can watch a recording of that presentation here (beginning at 1:38).

The plan will be formally launched on September 10 with the Walk 'n' Roll event. This public event will be a celebration and will feature a loop through downtown Squamish where participants can stop along the way and learn about accessibility.

As required by the Accessible BC Act, the District of Squamish invites feedback on the Accessibility Plan as well as accessibility within the District of Squamish. If you have feedback on the District of Squamish Accessibility Plan, or about accessibility in Squamish more generally, please email: accessibility@squamish.ca

You can also phone Municipal Hall at 604-892-5217 or send a letter to:

Accessibility Map

11 months

Use this mapping tool to indicate any District locations where accessibility barriers exist and tell us what they are. These may relate to public spaces, District facilities, transportation, events, or services.

Separate pins are provided for Accessibility Barriers (where we can improve) and Accessibility Wins (what we are doing well).

Using this mapping tool:

  1. Please drag a pin onto the map to indicate where an accessibility barrier or win is. You can add a pin by clicking the + button in the left column.
  2. Zoom in on the map by scrolling, double clicking, or using two fingers (mobile device) to be as accurate with your pin location as possible.
  3. Once you have placed a pin on the map, leave a comment on the pin to provide details about what the transportation challenge is in this location.
  4. Optional: You may include a photo of the issue with you pin, if you wish.
  5. Leave as many pins and comments as you like.

While using this tool:

  • Your comments will be public once they have been reviewed.
  • Your username and comments may appear in reports to Council as part of engagement reporting.
  • Comments that do not contribute to a safe and respectful space for others, or are unrelated to this topic, will not be posted. Please review our moderation policy.
CLOSED: This map consultation has concluded. It was open from March 10- April 30, 2023.
