Accessibility Plan
Consultation has concluded
The District of Squamish is creating an Accessibility Plan. It will identify barriers for people with disabilities accessing District facilities, programs, services, and information, and create a plan to remove these barriers. If you are comfortable, we want to know what barriers you (or someone you care for) face when accessing District facilities, infrastructure, and information. This could mean many things, but some examples include:
- District facilities such as Municipal Hall, the Library, or Brennan Park
- District infrastructure such as sidewalks, trails, or playgrounds
- District information such a job postings, Council meetings, and news updates
Your input will help us develop the accessibility plan. It will take time to remove all barriers, however, this plan is the first step in identifying how we can improve accessibility going forward.
In 2021, the Province of British Columbia passed the Accessible BC Act. This legislation requires municipalities to develop an accessibility plan that addresses all aspects of accessibility related to municipal infrastructure, programs, and services. If you are comfortable, we hope you will let us know your experience so we can improve accessibility for everyone.
Feedback opportunities for this stage of the project have now concluded. The following opportunities to participate were available:
- A survey was available on this page. For those who prefer not to complete the survey online, support was available by emailing kkidner@squamish.ca
- Identifying where barriers exist in physical spaces using the online mapping tool, or using in-person maps located at Squamish Public Library, The 55, and Brennan Park Recreation Centre
- Completing a comment card at The Squamish Public Library, The 55, or Brennan Park Recreation Centre
- Registering for a small group discussion to share your (or someone you care for's) accessibility experiences
Accessibility Plan and Next Steps
Thank you to everyone who participated in the process to help the District identify barriers to accessing District facilities, infrastructure, and information. The final Accessibility Plan, which includes a summary of what we heard, as well as goals and objectives to improve accessibility at the District of Squamish is now available. Staff presented the Accessibility Plan, as well as what we heard from the community to Council on June 27, 2023. You can watch a recording of that presentation here (beginning at 1:38).
The plan will be formally launched on September 10 with the Walk 'n' Roll event. This public event will be a celebration and will feature a loop through downtown Squamish where participants can stop along the way and learn about accessibility.
As required by the Accessible BC Act, the District of Squamish invites feedback on the Accessibility Plan as well as accessibility within the District of Squamish.
