The District of Squamish is creating a Heritage Management Strategy. As Squamish continues to evolve, important conversations are happening about what has cultural and heritage value in our community. The new strategy will aim to identify and manage the stories, places, and values that have shaped Squamish.
The new strategy will aim to guide decisions about protecting heritage assets in Squamish by:
- Identifying and defining what is considered a heritage asset in Squamish
- Developing policies to conserve heritage assets going forward
With this strategy, the District is working to integrate heritage values into community planning. We want to ensure that heritage assets are conserved, enhanced, and celebrated. The new strategy will aim to create connections between heritage conservation, the natural environment, and advancing truth and reconciliation, while continuing to plan for the Squamish of tomorrow.
Your input will help us to:
- Define what is considered a heritage asset in Squamish
- Identify which heritage values are important to our community
- Create a heritage register for Squamish.
Engagement Opportunities are Now Closed
The District engaged the community to hear about the stories, places and values that are important parts of Squamish’s heritage. Residents were able to participate by:
- Filling out the survey
- Dropping a pin on the map
- Sharing your stories
- Attending a drop-in information sessions or public open house
The engagement was open from July 11 to September 14, 2022. A summary of what we heard during the engagement is available here and was presented to Council on October 11, 2022. You can watch recordings of all Council meetings here.
The project team will use feedback from the community, as well as work with an advisory committee to develop a Heritage Strategy for Squamish.
