Welcome! We're glad you're here.

In July 2025, the District of Squamish and the Squamish Nation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), a commitment to collaborate on shared priorities, strengthen relationships, and take meaningful steps toward reconciliation. This page is your hub for learning about the MOU, sharing your voice, staying informed, and getting involved. We invite you to explore, participate, and walk this path with us.

The MOU outlines six Priority Activities that respond to injustices while promoting a more inclusive and cooperative future.

What This MOU Means and Doesn’t Mean

What it MEANS What it DOESN'T MEAN
A historic step forward on the journey of reconciliation between the Squamish Nation and the District of Squamish. It does not create any new legally binding obligations on either government.
It builds on a proven track record of successful joint initiatives, like flood protection infrastructure and community forest governance. It does not remove public access to parks or green spaces. “Land Back” intent is about exploring how public lands can be returned to Squamish Nation or co‑managed to uphold Indigenous rights and benefit the entire community.
A starting point for deeper conversations, and making decisions together in areas of shared interest for a coherent and vibrant shared future. It is not a final decision. It is the beginning of a process designed to include community input, dialogue, and learning.
A flexible framework that creates space for community participation and co‑development. It does not reduce District of Squamish authority but fosters shared collaboration for mutual benefit.
