Why we’re here

The District of Squamish is working hard to reduce recycling contamination.

Contamination occurs when material that is not accepted for recycling is put in recycling bins. We know we can work together to better support our environment, economy, and community at large – through common understanding and collective action.

We invite you to get involved in these four ways:

  1. Share your recommendation(s), through an online mapping tool, on potential locations for glass recycling stations as part of a new pilot project.

  2. Learn more about how and where to recycle in Squamish by reading our Recycling FAQ or go to squamish.ca/recycling.
  1. Take our quick poll to share your recycling style, if any.

  2. Provide your input, through the survey below, on what’s working for you - and what's not - when it comes to recycling.

Glass Recyling Pilot Project – help us determine collection station locations

We understand that glass recycling is a challenge for many residents, so we are working on a solution. The District of Squamish is developing a pilot program to test neighbourhood glass collection stations. The goal of this program is to reduce the high volume of glass contamination that is found in our community’s recycling totes by providing a local solution for residents to recycle their glass.

Each station will consist of two medium bear-resistant totes (locked), with a hole in the top, to drop glass into. Two temporary parking spots will be available for users.

Please provide your thoughts on potential locations for these neighbourhood glass collection stations by dropping pins on a virtual map. District staff will evaluate all suggested locations and final locations will be selected.

The stations will be piloted in 2024-2025 and evaluated for effectiveness.

Many Squamish residents unknowingly make mistakes as they recycle materials. This campaign and survey are focused on better understanding the challenges that members of our community face and how the District of Squamish can better support their recycling efforts.

Your insight is valuable to us - please share your thoughts.

Community Survey to Understand Your Challenges

A Community Recycling Survey has been launched to understand community needs, awareness and challenges around recycling and waste diversion. It also aims to gather information and feedback on recycling depot services and glass collection location options. Let us know what constraints and barriers you experience when recycling in Squamish and how we can better support you.

Online mapping tool to determine neighbourhood glass stations

about 2 months

Help us identify potential locations for a neighbourhood glass collection station for a pilot program the District is looking to launch!

The District is looking to launch a pilot program where glass collection stations are set-up throughout the neighbourhoods of Squamish The intent is that there will be two totes at multiple locations throughout town, where residents can drop-off glass-only, with the purpose of making it more convenient for residents to recycle glass, as well as reduce the amount of glass in our curbside recycling.

Each station would consist of:

  • Two medium totes that are bear-resistant, locked, and have a small-medium hole in the top for residents to drop the glass into

  • Sign on a post

  • A “Drop-off only, no parking” sign

  • lockblock that the carts will be chained to

  • One to two temporary parking spots for users

Instructions: Using the map of Squamish, please drop a pin(s) on locations within the community that you think would be an effective location for a neighbourhood glass station(s). To grab a pin, click the + sign and then drag the red pin to a place on the map. Once you place the pin, you will be able to leave a comment if you choose. (We would love to read!)
